Ages of Mages is a mixed bag of pros and cons. Though to the game’s credit, it does indeed manage to get more right than it gets wrong. The gameplay remains fun, fluid, and responsive, with just enough depth present across its enemy variation and its skill tree systems to keep it from repetition. The drawback, however, is that it’s bogged down by poor presentation, minor framerate issues, and unbalanced difficulty.

Each mage has had a lot of thought and effort placed into them and the different style they each possess means playing as every mage feelsEach mage has had a lot of thought and effort placed into them and the different style they each possess means playing as every mage feels rewarding and fun. While it can be fun playing on your own the game is without a doubt best played with friends and as far as local co-op games go it’s a decent addition. For me I think they’ve got the difficulty balanced perfectly because it’s both fun and challenging at the same time without becoming too frustrating. There are plenty of different upgrades you can apply to your mage and each upgrade feels different which keeps you coming back for more regularly. While the presentation side of the game isn’t particularly bad there really isn’t anything that stands out in both the visuals and sound design. Technically the game suffers with a few issues every now and then which can impact on the fun factor a little at times. In terms of content there isn’t a great deal for you to get to grips with and more content would’ve definitely been welcomed. Sometimes a game makes me go back to my childhood because back then there was nothing better than having a few friends over to play a game together. Unfortunately local co-op isn’t as profound nowadays but there are still a few games that capture that formula extremely well and even though it has a few shortcomings Ages of Mages: the last keeper is one of them games. You can guess then that this game is best enjoyed with 4 players but if you want to play it on your own then you also have that option as well. I would however recommend that you play the game with friends because for me it was a lot more fun that way. In terms of content though the game could’ve done with more because the content that is here is very moreish thanks to its variety. The variety then comes in the form of the different mages you can use and I must admit that I was impressed by the different styles each mage possessed. That’s not the only thing either because there are plenty of different upgrades available for your mages as well and both these inclusions without a doubt keep things fresh. At the end of the day then even though the game has a few technical issues and the presentation doesn’t have much that stands out Ages of Mages: the last keeper was a thoroughly enjoyable game and if you’re looking for a decent local co-op offering then you can do much worse than this game.
