An unnamed boy slides down a rocky incline, on the run from an unknown source. As he moves through an eerie forest, he comes across masked guards that he must avoid with no explanation as to why. This is the start of Playdead’s ‘Inside’ (their follow up to the hugely popular Limbo) and the mystery and intrigue only escalates from there on. Winner of multiple awards, this 2D puzzle platform adventure game has received critical acclaim from around the world.
The visuals are stunning (in a really creepy way), featuring a mainly monochrome world with the odd splashes of colour and the audio is mainly silent with occasional sounds and musical interludes here and there. Both these factors only add to the tension that mounts the further you delve into the completely unpredictable and fascinating storyline.
The controls are very simple but there’s no on-screen or spoken instructions, so you’ll have to work it out as you go. This will inevitably lead you to die numerous times but you’ll learn from each mistake you make and with frequent checkpoints and quick loading times, dying won’t feel like too much of a chore. In fact, the deaths are so creative (and somewhat terrifying) that you may well find yourself enjoying the unnamed boy’s occasional demise.
