Storyline

Total War: ROME REMASTERED is a modernized remaster of ROME: Total War (2004). It is a strategy game set in ancient Rome, where players manage their faction with the aim to defeat other rival factions, conquer ancient Rome and become emperor, using a combination of diplomatic, military and economic tactics. Gameplay takes place on an accurate representation of ancient Rome and surrounding countries and is divided into two core elements.

1) The Campaign map – This is a turn-based campaign map in which the player is able to recruit and train troops, manage cities & towns through building, progresses through technologies, engage in diplomacy, start wars in order to achieve domination over other competing factions. The aim on the campaign map is to take territory from other factions and dominate the map. This is done through a combination of military (moving and positioning armies across a map) and non-military strategies (which can be achieved via trade & diplomacy, and/or by deploying agents to uncover information about rivals).

2) The Battles – there are real time 3D land battles with a high level of graphical realism. These result from the movement and clash of armies on the campaign map. Players control their army in real time against their opponent, in a 3D map environment. Armies are broken into units which can be controlled individually or as a combination. Units can be ordered in various ways to move and attack, in an effort to defeat the enemy. There are various broad types of units to choose from, each with their own stats (ie: infantry, ranged infantry, cavalry, siege etc.). A battle is resolved once one persons army is defeated.

Players can choose to play:

- The main campaign as one of a number of factions (certain factions are only playable once they have been defeated in the core campaign)

- A Historical Battle: pre-set conditions, representing historically accurate battles

- Custom Battle: players can customise their battle (ie: choose factions, conditions, etc.)

- Quick Battle: players are placed into a random battle scenario

- Multiplayer: against other players (online)

Total War: ROME REMASTERED contains two expansion packs that were originally released separately for ROME: Total War (2004):

- ROME: Total War - BARBARIAN INVASION

- ROME: Total War - ALEXANDER

Both of these expansion packs have been remastered alongside the base game and are part of the core product.

First of all, the first thing I want to point out is don't buy or play this game if you want to feel nostalgic. If you are a true Total WarFirst of all, the first thing I want to point out is don't buy or play this game if you want to feel nostalgic. If you are a true Total War fan and would like to have Total War: Rome REMASTERED in your library, you can buy it and play it. However, I would like to point out that the game is Remaster, not Remake. By knowing this, buy and play the game. Otherwise, you will be grievously disappointed.Although there are new elements and improvements, naturally, there are mostly improvements without going beyond graphic enhancement. However, I prefer the AI of Rome: Total War to the AI of Total War: Rome REMASTERED. In the REMASTERED version, both the campaign map and battle AI are disgraceful; at least that's how I experienced it. Units change formations just randomly. Sometimes they are acting like I'm not giving the order them to do something. The only bad thing about the REMASTERED version is the AI, and it is bad, really bad. I mean it!However, the game has its advantages, too. Total War: Rome REMASTERED appears to be a completely new game that was not released as an improvement over the original Rome: Total War. This is the point that makes me worried. So, it also means they're changing artificial intelligence. If only they hadn't... From the graphics improvements to the game's REMASTERED version, there are more user-friendly elements in the game, also new contents that we haven't seen in the original Rome: Total War. The game supports ultra HD resolution. There's also amazing updated 3D unit models and textures, widescreen and ultra-wide monitor support. Not to mention the new agent Merchant, of course. The atmosphere of war, campaign map and visual effects are also included in the graphic development. The new pieces of information and lines on the faction, trade, summary, etc. screen and unit information screens on the campaign map of the game have also been improved. In addition, improved camera and control settings have been added to the game. In addition to these, there are also quick access lists to facilitate access.Overall, it is a good game to experience Rome: Total War with good graphics and atmosphere, but as I said before; "...don't buy or play this game if you want to feel nostalgic. If you are a true Total War fan and would like to have Total War: Rome REMASTERED in your library, you can buy it and play it. However, I would like to point out that the game is Remaster, not Remake. By knowing this, buy and play the game. Otherwise, you will be grievously disappointed."By the way, I started with Julii, and defeated the Gauls, fought with Britannia and Spain to the death, did Marian Reforms, conquered half of Europe, hit to top on the economy; that was a good experience. But, I'm not talking about AI.

A decent remaster of a great game. I just hope the devs will squash all the remaining bugs, tune-up AI, fix pathfinding and add mod support.

All in all, if you're a Total War fan, especially someone who loved Rome: Total War back in the day, Total War: Rome Remastered is a fantastic way to jump back into the older game with some modern improvements. You'll have to get past some of the more archaic bits of the design, but the core experience: conquering the world and ushering your faction through Rome's civil war period is still so satisfying.

Total War: Rome Remastered is a blast of nostalgia for those who have fond memories of losing hours of their night as they attempt to conquer just one more enemy city. Nostalgia is also the primary selling point for the game, however, as new players would be better-suited starting with a more recent title and experienced fans will miss certain quality of life features present in modern strategy games. While Total War: Rome Remastered does an honorable job of reviving an old classic, the fresh coat of paint does little to cover up its outdated mechanics, and it's likely that only established fans looking to return to a title they loved once before will get much out the remaster as a result.
