On the negative side there are some bugs and a valid statement is that the developer tried to to add too many stuff to the game instead of improving fewer things. I say however that I see no truly bad stuff in the game. The story is set in Heryon. There the people have build a society focused on magic that is based on crystals. Approx 30 years ago the Archilites arrived with their spaceships on the planet. They had highly advanced technology but no magic. First both sides existed peacefully and resources were traded but when the Archilites asked for the magic crystals the people of Heryon refused out of fear to be colonized and suppressed. Soon after this a war started between magic and technology. While at first it looked that the Archilites will win easily the tide slowly turned because the people of Heryon never gave up and adapted everything for victory. However the Archilites used a terrifying final weapon called the corrosion. A biological weapon that turns the victims slowly into machine / organic hybrids. At the present the solider Daryon gets a letter from his sister the priestess Selene that their mother caught the corrosion. After the prologue Daryon deserts to help his sister find a cure. So they travel trough the war-torn lands. The story is good and got me hooked. Not the best but also far from the worst in RPGs. It has some nice twist and surprises. I truly enjoyed the characters. Be it Daryon, Selene, Ysoris, Theia, Fallon, Alpharius, Kora or others. The sidequests are a bit mixed as some are really good like the Umbra side quest line for example while other are more boring like the hunting of standard monsters. There are some bugs like slow downs and graphical glitches like only heads for NPC are visible until you come close enough. I had approx 7 crashes during my approx 60 hour playtrough (Done a lot of side quests and a bit of grinding). None got me lost more than a few minutes so I am not that angry. Graphically the game is a bit outdated but the artwork is nice. The soundtrack is good and the voice actors were well chose. The translation for the text was sometimes a bit off but tolerable. Overall I enjoyed the game a give an 8/10 with small developer bonus. Wont disagree with the others 6/10 ratings here on Metacritic as compared to bigger games with a lot more budget it is weaker but this would be unfair for me.

Enfin, graphiquement très inégal, cette daube propose un mode performance sur Series X mais reste incapable de maintenir ses 60 im/s ! les saccades récurrentes nuisent grandement à l’expérience, déjà fort lamentable en soi. Bref, c’est de la merde !

You do tons of work to craft grind quest then equip them and they go poof because of the story….never to come back. It'ss not even a mini boss. Just a normal fight.The only amazing fun things in this game are the environments, at night only, daytime lighting makes the game look old.And the kitty mount. Which surprise, the devs decided to also take it from you every corner you turn, followed up by locking you from teleporting…..the teleport blocking is major. IDK what they are thinking, seriously. If the teleporting was locked short term, ok sure, but its not short, we are talking 10's of hours, it opens up again for maybe 30 minutes, then boom, you do one part of the story and they all lock all over again for 10's of hours. No devs, No. Go back to school.Game could've been good, devs decisions are horrible. I rate it a six because its playable and when its night, looks gorgeous on an oled tv. Beyond that, forget this game honestly. Persona 5 is still the Turn Based RPG king for this decade.Also, the fact that this game struggles to hit 60 FPS, let alone 120 on the PS5 is a joke.

Despite all the rough edges and problems, I am impressed with Edge of Eternity‘s ambition. The developers have some grand dreams on display here, but the fact is that a lack of polish and too many ideas stuffed into one package leave Edge of Eternity an overcomplicated, unfinished product.

Edge Of Eternity has some modern touches – you can freely speed up battles, and a variety of difficulty toggles can reduce the grind. Less care, however, has been given to optimisation. Even on PS5 you’ll fail to get a smooth framerate in performance mode when out in the field, and while teleporting is fast, assets can’t keep up, clipping in sometimes seconds later. It might hold you over until Final Fantasy XVI arrives but it’s hard not to feel like you’re playing, as the French say, a faux pas.

Edge of Eternity is a passion project with a hell of a lot of heart. The art direction is phenomenal, the combat satisfying and the content positively bursting with hours of enjoyment. Poor performance, less interesting side content and a mediocre story keep it from greatness, but the heart of this package deserves its praise and to be revered into the future.

The characters are interesting and have more characters than in your run of the mill JRPG. A main character that is a bit sassy is a refreshing breath of fresh air, when you consider most main characters in JRPGs are either the nice guy or the quite guy, that barely talks. Also the other characters are interesting and you often whitness some funny scenes.The overall story might not be exceptional, but it keeps you going.The battle system is the best thing about this game. It's addictive and a wellcome change from the occasional button masher. You can try different tactics with different skills and the game even rewards you for doing so, because you have some special objectives in most fights, and you get some bonus items or money when you complete them. Also it is very important to plan ahead and pick the right build. And the variety of gems and equipment really helps. It's really motivating to try different combinations and craft gems, to get even stronger gems, with better skills.Another plus are the multitude of customizations. It might be a bit overwhelming at first, how many options you have, to customize the game, but once you find out what everything does, you can create your own individual game experience. You can set the difficulty of the fights, how party and enemylevel scale, if saving everywhere is enabled or not, if you can teleport, how far the camera will be from your characters and of course you can also adjust the battle speed to your liking.The downside of this game is, that it has a lot of technical limitations. For example you will experience some framerate drops, the graphic can't compete with big AAA or even AA titles. The way you interact with characters and objects is sometimes weird, because you don't interact with the thing you face, but with the nearest thing to you, even if its behind you.If you are able to look past the technical problems of this game you will get a real hidden gem. What it tries to do, it does right. It creates an interesting world with a lot of lore, with loveable characters and a great battle system. And most of all it tries something all the big studios don't do anymore. It creates an JRPG like in the golden age and scratches an itch I've had for a long time.And in the end what matters is, what you receive for your money. And I got a lot of great hours out of this game, for a small price. That's why I rate this game 9/10.

Unfortunately it has a lot of problems with slow downs, texture and geometry pop in, bad models, repetitive Gameplay, random difficulty spikes, convoluted systems and a whole host of quality of life issues. If you are a hard-core jrpg enthusiasts you will find a certain charm. I can see it becoming a hidden gem in just a year or two. But if this is a first try for this company I am interested to see what they can do in the future.

This is an enjoyable JRPG that fans of the genre will like, as it feels like a tribute to the genre. Its main issue is trying to bite more than it can chew and delivering a somewhat irregular experience.

The humor is out of place, and although the developer attempted to shoehorn in some lighthearted moments, it falls flat and feels awkward when the player isn't emotionally invested enough in what's going on to need a funny one-liner to ease the tension.Everything here just screams average, yet there's going to be a large subsection of the gaming population who is going to try to tell you that the game is great because it was made by a small team, and that people are being too harsh on it, etc. Everyone needs to remember that when you're paying for a product, you can't make excuses for someone who is providing a substandard experience and trying to take your money for it. Stop excusing lazy developers and poor work.

Edge of Eternity is tough to recommend—which is a real shame, because the potential and ambition here is clear. There’s some entertainment to be found in its combat system and the sense of wonder in its more impressive zones, but it’s held back by a lack of substance once the sense of wonder starts to wear off and a woeful story.

I just did not care enough about anything that I was seeing or doing to enjoy Edge of Eternity. The narrative lacks thought and insight, the characters are bland, and each new location simply means more fetch quests and slightly higher level enemies to go through the motions to fight. Edge of Eternity is undoubtedly beautiful and the art team deserves kudos, but it is a hollow, empty, and shallow kind of beauty, and with no intelligence nor soul to back it up, the talents of the artists are largely wasted on this one.

While not every idea in Edge of Eternity fully gels, developer Midgar Studio gets enough right that the game feels familiar and welcoming – a fantastic classic RPG in modern clothing. With fun characters, a solid battle system, and just enough surprises to maintain the player’s attention, Edge of Eternity announces the arrival of Midgar to the top echelon of JRPG developers.

I have no hesitation in recommending Edge of Eternity. It is a huge game, but more importantly, it has an epic story to be told. The combat system has some nice touches which keeps it fresh, and the crafting is deep and immersive. This is a game that many will be playing for days and weeks on end, with Midgar Studios needing praise for creating something special.

It's an indie development, so it's not as polished as a AAA title, but it's a really good investment for the price, taking me more time to complete just the first few chapters than it took to completely beat FF7 remake.The combat is turn-based and uses enemy weaknesses, a grid system, and items on the map to help you or hurt you in battle. There is an in-depth gathering/crafting system and a lot of sidequests, some of which have a story attached to them. I usually stay far away from puzzles, but the puzzles in this game (almost all optional) are actually really fun. The crystal system to upgrade your skills and stats is unique, and sort of a mix between the FF13-2 upgrade tree and FF7 materia. Lots of customization potential, and several combat difficulty levels to chose from.Really great music, some of it by well-known composer Yasunori Mitsuda.The story is very engaging, I was surprised at the high quality of story writing and voice acting. It's so rare to come across a really well done story. A lot of it is quite funny, but there are serious aspects as well. I was barely holding back tears at one point. Some of the characters are all-time favorites for me now.Overall, this game has a lot of depth and replay value. You can beat it in 30-50 hours, but I've currently played for 190 hours. This is definitely one of the best jrpg games I've played in my life.

Edge of Eternity aims for the stars and manages to reach a few of them, delivering a compelling plot and an expansive, varied, and often-beautiful world. Sadly, clunky dialogue, issues with exploration and combat, and a pervasive level of jankiness hold the game back. You have to admire Midgar Studio for pushing themselves, but as is, the Edge of Eternity may be too jagged for some.

Edge of Eternity is a love letter to classic Final Fantasy and Xenoblade games. It doesn’t live up to the level of its influences, but given the small team and limited resources, it’s an impressive attempt. The story does rely on tropes and the characters aren’t all that likeable, and while the game comes close to reaching its ambitious goals, it never reaches its full potential. It does scratch the JRPG itch and fans of the games that influenced it will likely get a lot of enjoyment from Edge of Eternity, but ultimately it’s a good but not great JRPG.
