Over twenty years since the release of the original game, Dynasty Warriors have brought out their ninth instalment of the classic hack and slash series. In many ways DW9 stays true to its roots but there are a number of improved elements and some entirely new features that have given the popular game a significant upgrade. For the first time in the series an open world format has been introduced, enabling you to explore China’s vast expanses of snow planes, jungles and deserts (to name a few). All eighty-three characters from DW8 return (with new designs and costumes obviously) and seven additional warriors have been added to the line up to complete a ninety-strong roster. Considering each of the characters have their own ending you’re sure to not get bored!
New ‘Interactive Action’ enables you to use the surroundings and the environment to your advantage. Whether it’s climbing mountains, swimming across lakes, using a grappling hook to scale walls or exploding oil barrels with flaming arrows, this new feature is a great addition to an already well-established series. Real-time weather effects and a day/night cycle can also play a big in how your enemies move about and how you defeat them – use a storm to your advantage and sneak past an unsuspecting enemy for example. The final new feature is the introduction of ‘Hideouts’ which enable you to interact with characters you’ve met and purchase different objects from across the DW9 world. Well played Dynasty Warriors, keep up the good work!
