It took them long enough but the kind folks at id Software FINALLY released a new Doom. It’s the fourth in the series (even if we like to pretend Doom III never happened) and takes us back to the glory days of the two originals. When asked what the key features of the new Doom would be, id Software’s Executive Producer said, “badass demons, big effing guns and moving really fast.” I mean what more could you want? It’s just oozing with nostalgia and will have anyone that played the originals back in the 90’s reminiscing with sheer delight. There’s the return of all your favourite weapons like the BFG and chainsaw as well as your classic enemies like Pinky and Cyberdemon too.
You’re back in outer space (Mars to be precise) at a research facility that’s been invaded by demonic monsters and only the Demon Slayer and his Praetor Suit can possibly save day. It’s high octane action at it’s very best with the Slayer sprinting and double jumping through levels wiping out hordes of demons at a frightening pace. As with the originals the emphasis is on momentum and speed (there’s no cover system or health regeneration over time) and the only way to gain health and armour is to kill more demons. There’s not even any time wasted reloading!
There’s also a new feature known as ‘Glory Kills’ which is a brutal melee finisher that you can perform on demons when they’ve taken enough damage and you even get rewarded with extra health for it! Another exciting addition is the introduction of Snapmap – a new level editing tool. Use it to create customised maps and everything in them (monsters, weapons etc.) and the good news is it’s pretty easy to use. Oh yeah and it’s got an award-winning soundtrack! Winning!
